About the Author and the Book

Dudley M. Canright held leadership and evangelistic roles in the Seventh-day Adventist Church before his departure in 1887. Canright's Seventh-day Adventism Renounced was published 1889 by the Fleming H. Revell Company, a major evangelical publisher. The book remained in print for decades. By 1914, it had reached its fourteenth edition, with Canright adding material and responding to SDA arguments as the controversy developed. It is still available today in paperback and leather editions on Amazon.

Worldwide Impact

The significance of this book is difficult to overstate. Canright's book carried his attack on Seventh-day Adventism into the mainstream evangelical publishing world where it reached Protestant ministers, pastors, libraries, and thousands of readers. It became a foundational "textbook" for Protestant ministers and counter-cult researchers opposing Seventh-day Adventism across the English-speaking world. Within years of its release, the book achieved transatlantic and global distribution. It was heavily imported into Great Britain, Australia, and South Africa.

SDA leadership viewed Canright’s book as an existential threat to their evangelistic outreach. The sect published an entire book specifically written to refute it, Reply to Canright: Refutation of the Claims of D. M. Canright (1889).
