Ronald L. Numbers
(June 3, 1942 – July 24, 2023)
One of the most distinguished historians of science and medicine of his generation. Born into a prominent Seventh-day Adventist family, Numbers earned his Ph.D. in the history of science from UC Berkeley (1969). His groundbreaking Prophetess of Health (1976) demonstrated through meticulous research that Ellen White's health teachings were drawn from contemporary reformers rather than divine revelation—a discovery that led to his dismissal from Loma Linda University and expulsion from the SDA Church.
Numbers served as Professor of the History of Science and Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1974-2013). His scholarly achievements include authoring six books and editing nearly 40 volumes, including the eight-volume Cambridge History of Science and the landmark study The Creationists: From Scientific Creationism to Intelligent Design (1992).
"The most significant work on Ellen White in the 1970s was Prophetess of Health: A Study of Ellen G. White by Ronald L. Numbers. ... Numbers' small volume, thoroughly researched and clearly written, was a first-class piece of historical scholarship and recognized as such in professional journals."
"Shifting Views of Inspiration," Spectrum, vol. 10, no. 4 (1979)

"Prophetess of Health treats with considerable documentation the health writings of the Adventist leader."
The definitive historical study of Ellen G. White's health teachings, now with a new preface and updated scholarship. Numbers demonstrates through careful archival research how White's dietary and medical advice was drawn from contemporary health reformers of the 19th century.
